PROBLEM SOLVING: POLLUTION FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES (First Part)

The problem

A customer of ours, complained about an high consumption rate of filter elements on an hydraulic plant, utilized to move glass panes. To resolve the problem, he tried to utilize filter elements less selective, with the only result to have the system more polluted and have continuous components sizings.

The cause

Analyzing an oil sample taken from this plant, we found an high concentration of a particular dust used to manipulate the panes, composed by plastic microspheres with diameter from near 10 to up to 100um. The hydraulic system utilized as reservoir breather, utilized a filtered filler plug with 40um nominal rate filtration capacity.
Being the hydraulic reservoir not a big one, and since it was utilized to feed up an hydraulic piston  with a discrete stroke, the oil level variation inside the tank was huge and consequently the same was for the quantity of air coming in and out from the tank to compensate these level changings. This big air flow dragged with it the above mentioned plastic dust, and the dust falling in the oil, polluted it.

The solution

To adopt for the reservoir air breathing , a corrected filtered breather, able to catch the microsferoidals particles. From then, this customer have never had components sizing or abnormal filter elements consumption.
