PROBLEM SOLVING: VARNISH IN OIL

The problem

Delicate  machines require more and more often not only severely filtered oils but also oils purified from external substances. The varnish (the set of lacquers and chemical decay products that are created in the hydraulic and lubricating oil during its work) is an example of these by-products that have to be kept away from the system for its good functioning.

The cause

Measuring the varnish is not difficult, but you need to have the correct instrumentation and follow a precise regulation. The result of the varnish test is a color which expresses a number that determines the concentration of these products. They tend to electrostatically settle on metal surfaces and stratify, ending up creating problems with parts in sliding or rotating. If the fluid comes into contact with the product, there may be problems of contamination of the product itself with consequent production losses.

The solution

How can we kepp the Varnish? First thing: forget to stop the varnish with the classic filter for oleodynamics at one absolute micron: the varnish are gelatinous when they are suspended in the fluid, so they tend to pass through the filter. Varnish should be taken when it is suspended in oil, it can be mitigated but not eliminated forever, because it is not a casual pollution that once removed does not regenerate as the production of varnish is part of the life of the fluid itself. The mitigation of the same occurs both chemically and physically: 1) chemically it acts with electrostatically charged resins, very efficient but expensive, 2) physically, the fluid is passed through special filtering septa of large thickness with extremely low flow rates , the combination of these two characteristics, causes the varnishes to stop in the filter media, this solution has lower costs but the process is slow. In both cases the results are excellent as a function of yield and reliability of the treated system.
